Part 2: A Choice That Made a Difference
The hiking trip took place that weekend. When the students returned, Sarah immediately noticed her son. He looked exhausted—his clothes were dusty, his face tired, and his body clearly worn out.
Concerned, she rushed to him and asked what had happened.
Leo simply replied, “We didn’t leave him.”
At first, she didn’t understand. Then another parent explained: the trail had been long and challenging, with steep sections and uneven paths. Students who couldn’t complete it were supposed to stay behind at the campsite.
But Leo had made a different choice.
He carried Sam on his back for much of the journey.
Step by step, despite fatigue and difficulty, he made sure his friend experienced the hike alongside everyone else. Whenever Sam worried or suggested stopping, Leo reassured him: “I’ve got you.”
Teachers were concerned about safety and rules being broken, and while Sarah understood their perspective, she couldn’t ignore what her son had done. Beneath her worry was a deep sense of pride.
To Leo, it wasn’t about breaking rules—it was about making sure his friend wasn’t left behind.
