Part 2: When Kindness Is Challenged

The next morning, everything changed.

I woke up to raised voices outside and rushed out to see what was happening. A neighbor, Mrs. Harlow, stood in front of Caleb’s house, visibly upset. She complained that the ramp “ruined the appearance” of the street.

Before anyone could respond, she grabbed a metal object and forcefully damaged the ramp until it broke apart.

The street fell silent.

Caleb sat at the top of the steps again—back where he started—watching instead of participating.

Back at home, Ethan sat quietly, staring at his hands.

“I should’ve made it stronger,” he said, blaming himself.

I reassured him: “You did something good. That’s what matters.”

Still, the disappointment lingered.

But what none of us expected was what would happen next.
