Part 2: The Wedding and the Unknown
The sound of approaching vehicles pulled everyone’s attention toward the road.
A line of black SUVs entered the churchyard, polished and out of place against the dusty surroundings.
People fell silent.
Then the groom stepped out.
Annette’s breath caught.
He wasn’t what she expected.
He was young. Calm. Composed.
There was no arrogance in the way he moved—just quiet confidence. The men around him seemed protective, but he didn’t rely on their presence.
When his eyes met hers, something shifted inside her.
Not comfort.
Not fear.
Something uncertain… something deeper.
Inside the church, the ceremony began, but Annette barely heard the words. Her heart beat loudly in her chest, drowning everything else out.
When Isaac Tumusiime stood beside her, he kept a respectful distance.
It was subtle.
But intentional.
As the priest spoke, the moment came.
“Do you take—”
Annette’s thoughts blurred.
This wasn’t the life she had imagined.
This wasn’t the future she had planned.
But it was the reality she stood in.
“Annette?”
She looked up and met Isaac’s gaze.
There was something in his eyes—not pressure, not expectation, but restraint.
And for reasons she couldn’t fully explain, she answered softly:
“Yes.”
The word echoed longer than it should have.
Or maybe it just felt that way.
To everyone else, it was a happy ending—a solution, a success, a rescue.
But to Annette, it felt like the beginning of something unknown.
