2. The Day Everything Changed

When I was thirty-five weeks pregnant, Ethan had to travel overseas for an important business trip. His company was expanding operations internationally, and he needed to finalize several contracts.

He promised he would only be gone a couple of days.

Before leaving, he double-checked everything—my hospital bag, the emergency numbers, the route to the hospital, and even the baby’s medical notes. Ethan was the kind of man who prepared for everything.

Still, I felt nervous watching him leave.

Two days later, my mother called and asked if I could stop by their house to deliver some paperwork. I hesitated, but old habits are hard to break, so I agreed.

Not long after arriving, I began to feel something strange.

At first it was just pressure in my back. Then the tightening began.

Within minutes, the pain intensified.

“I think something’s wrong,” I told my mother.

Instead of reacting with urgency, she brushed it off.

“First babies take a long time,” she said casually.

But moments later, the situation became impossible to ignore.

My water broke.

Panic flooded through me as I struggled to stay calm. I asked my parents to call emergency services, but the response was slow and uncertain.

Desperate, I grabbed my phone and called Ethan.

He answered immediately.

“Amelia.”

Just hearing his voice made me feel less alone.

“I think the baby is coming,” I told him, trying to breathe through the pain.

His tone instantly shifted into focused calm.

“Stay with me,” he said. “Help is on the way.”

I didn’t understand what he meant—he was thousands of miles away.

Then, a few minutes later, the sound began.

A powerful, rhythmic roar echoed across my parents’ backyard.

My father opened the door just as a large helicopter descended onto the lawn.

Across the side of the aircraft were the words:

Cole Response Air

The medical team moved quickly, carrying equipment and preparing to transport me.

And then Ethan stepped out.

He had crossed an ocean and returned home immediately.

He knelt beside me, held my face gently, and said the words I needed most:

“I’m here.”

Within minutes, the team carefully lifted me onto a stretcher and transported me to the helicopter.

As we lifted into the air toward the hospital, Ethan stayed beside me the entire time, guiding my breathing and keeping me calm.

For the first time since the contractions started, I felt safe.
