Part 2: The Unexpected Visitor

The next morning, while cleaning up the kitchen, the doorbell rang.

Ashley was still asleep, so I answered it.

Standing there was an older man holding a worn briefcase. He looked nervous, almost hesitant, as if he wasn’t sure he should be there.

Without much introduction, he stepped inside and opened the briefcase.

It was filled with cash.

I froze.

“I want to give this to your daughter,” he said quietly.

I immediately felt uneasy. “Why?” I asked.

His answer changed everything.

He explained that he had been at the shelter the day before. He had seen Ashley handing out cookies, smiling the same way someone from his past used to smile.

Then he said something I never expected:

He was Hannah’s father.

The same man who had once turned his back on her.

Silence filled the room.

He didn’t ask for forgiveness. He didn’t try to justify the past. Instead, he said he wanted to do something for his granddaughter—something he had never done for his own daughter.

But there was one condition:

Ashley could never know where the money came from.

That request didn’t sit right with me.

Money can solve problems, but it cannot erase history. And it certainly cannot replace honesty.
