2. Becoming a Father by Choice
Many years earlier, my life had taken a very different path.
I met my wife, Julia, when we were both in our thirties. From the beginning, we were honest about what we wanted from life. One of the things we both dreamed about was becoming parents.
Unfortunately, after years of trying, doctors told us that Julia would not be able to have children. It was heartbreaking news, but we refused to give up on our dream of building a family.
That was when we decided to adopt.
Nancy was three years old when we first met her. She arrived with a small backpack and a quiet expression, carefully observing everything around her. Julia greeted her gently, and I introduced myself, hoping to make her feel welcome.
At first Nancy was cautious. She didn’t immediately run into our arms or call us “Mom” and “Dad.” She simply stepped into the house and began learning whether she could trust us.
Slowly, day by day, she did.
But life took another difficult turn when Nancy was five. One day I came home and found a note from Julia explaining that she had decided to leave. She felt overwhelmed and unsure of the life we had created.
That night I sat beside Nancy’s bed, thinking about the responsibility I had accepted when we adopted her. I realized I had a choice: I could walk away from the challenge, or I could be the father she deserved.
The next morning Nancy asked where Julia was. When I told her the truth, she asked me a question I will never forget.
“Are you leaving me too?”
I looked her in the eyes and promised her something that would guide the rest of my life.
“No,” I said. “I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.”
From that moment forward, I committed myself fully to raising her. I packed school lunches, helped with homework, and cheered at every school event. I learned what foods she liked, what music made her happy, and how to support her when life felt overwhelming.
When she told me she wanted to study digital design and animation in college, I supported her without hesitation.
“Go for it,” I told her. “I’ll help make it happen.”
She worked hard, graduated, and eventually built a successful career. Watching her grow into a confident and talented adult became one of the greatest joys of my life.
