Erin gently gathered the kittens, wrapping them carefully. The mother cat didn’t resist; she seemed calm, almost trusting. Baxter stayed close, watching over them as if he had always known this moment would come.
Back at home, Erin prepared a comfortable space—a laundry basket lined with soft towels. She placed it near the armchair where Lily used to sit and read. The kittens curled together, and the mother cat settled in peacefully.
When Daniel came downstairs and saw them, he paused in surprise. Erin explained everything—the sweater, the shed, Lily’s quiet act of care.
He listened, then softly said, “She was helping them.”
And in that moment, something shifted.
They decided to care for the animals together.
In the days that followed, a gentle rhythm returned to the house. Feeding the kittens, changing blankets, watching them grow—these small acts brought a sense of purpose back into their lives. Baxter remained close, protective and calm.
One evening, Erin walked into Lily’s room without hesitation. She picked up a bracelet Lily had been making and tied it around her wrist. Sitting at the desk, she opened the sketchbook and looked at the unfinished sunflower.
For the first time in weeks, she smiled.
That night, holding the yellow sweater, she whispered softly, “I’ll take care of them. Just like you did.”
The house was still quiet—but no longer empty.
Because Lily’s kindness had not disappeared.
It had simply found a new way to live on.
