Part 2: A Shocking New Beginning

A cold shock went through me before I even fully understood what I was hearing.

My father explained himself carefully, almost rehearsed. He said Victoria had been there during Mom’s illness, helping care for her, supporting the family, and staying close after the diagnosis became worse. After Mom passed away, they leaned on each other in shared grief.

Over time, he said, that comfort turned into something deeper.

Love.

He told us life was too short to wait, too unpredictable to postpone happiness. And then, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, he said he had proposed to Victoria.

She had accepted.

The wedding was already being planned.

I didn’t know how to respond. Anger rose in me, tangled with disbelief and confusion. I was still grieving my mother, still trying to understand life without her, and now I was being asked to accept that my father was marrying her sister.

Yet he looked certain—calm in a way I couldn’t challenge in that moment.

In the end, I said very little. The only thing I agreed to was to attend the wedding.

For him.

For what was left of our family.

The day came sooner than I expected.

The venue was decorated beautifully. Music played softly in the background. Guests filled the space with laughter, greetings, and warm conversations. People congratulated my father and Victoria as if this was simply another joyful family event.

But to me, it felt like standing in the middle of two worlds that didn’t belong together.

I forced myself to smile. I shook hands. I offered polite words I didn’t feel.

Then I stepped away from the crowd, needing air, needing distance.

That was when I felt a tap on my shoulder.

My younger brother stood behind me.

And he wasn’t smiling.
