Part 2: The Plan
Instead of exploding in anger, I chose something smarter.
That evening, after feeding the triplets and putting them to sleep, I approached Sam with a calm smile.
“I’m sorry,” I told him softly. “Let me take you out tomorrow night to celebrate finally being home together.”
His face lit up instantly.
He thought he had won.
What he didn’t know was that the dinner I was planning would be very different from what he imagined.
The next day, I started making calls.
I invited his parents.
My parents.
His sister.
A few close relatives and friends.
I told them we needed to have an important conversation.
That evening my sister came to watch the babies while Sam and I prepared to leave the apartment.
Before we got into the car, I handed him a piece of cloth.
“What’s that?” he asked, laughing.
“A blindfold,” I said with a playful smile. “I planned a surprise.”
He laughed and let me tie it around his eyes.
He thought it was romantic.
In reality, it was the beginning of the most uncomfortable night of his life.
After a short drive across town, I helped him out of the car and led him into a house.
He could hear voices around him, but he couldn’t see anyone.
Then I removed the blindfold.
Sam blinked in confusion.
We were standing in his sister’s living room.
Around him sat his parents, my parents, relatives, and friends.
Everyone was watching.
Silently.
“What is this?” he asked, irritated.
I took a deep breath.
“I invited everyone here because I’m worried about Sam,” I said calmly.
He laughed nervously.
“Worried about me?”
Instead of answering, I connected my phone to the television.
The first thing that appeared on the screen was his post from Instagram.
Gasps filled the room.
Then I showed the photos I had taken earlier that day.
Dirty dishes.
Overflowing trash.
Piles of takeout containers.
“This,” I said quietly, “is what I came home to after leaving the hospital with three newborn babies.”
Sam shifted uncomfortably.
Then I spoke again.
“I believe Sam may lack some basic life skills.”
The room went completely silent.
