Part 2: An Unexpected Return and a Letter from the Past

Just as life had finally settled into a sense of normalcy, the past returned in the most unexpected way.

One afternoon, there was a knock at the door. When I opened it, I found Edwin standing there. Time had clearly changed him—he looked older, thinner, and visibly worn. But it was undeniably him.

The girls were in the kitchen, unaware of who stood at the door. Edwin didn’t ask to see them right away. Instead, he handed me a sealed envelope and quietly said, “Please don’t open this in front of them.”

Confused and overwhelmed, I stepped outside and opened it. Inside was a letter dated fifteen years earlier—the very time he had disappeared. The paper showed signs of being handled many times, as if he had revisited those words again and again.

In the letter, Edwin explained that after his wife’s passing, he discovered serious financial problems—hidden debts, unpaid bills, and unstable accounts that he hadn’t known about. Despite his efforts, the situation worsened, leaving him feeling trapped and overwhelmed.

He wrote that he believed leaving his daughters in my care would protect them from the instability he feared he couldn’t escape. In his mind, it was the only way to give them a chance at a secure and normal life.

Along with the letter were official documents—recently dated—showing that he had resolved those financial issues. The papers indicated that everything had been cleared and that assets had been legally transferred to his daughters.

When I confronted him, he admitted it had taken him years to fix everything. He didn’t try to justify his actions fully or expect immediate forgiveness. He simply acknowledged the impact of his decision and apologized.

Although his explanation provided clarity, it didn’t erase the years of absence or the weight of responsibility I had carried alone.
