Directions
- Make the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir until smooth. Adjust seasoning to taste and set aside.
- Caramelize the Onions: Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and caramelized. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
- Form and Cook Patties: Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape into patties slightly larger than the bread slices. Season both sides with salt and pepper. Cook patties in the same skillet over medium heat for 4 minutes per side (or to your desired doneness). Remove and set aside.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Butter one side of each slice of bread. Spread secret sauce on the non-buttered sides of 4 slices. Layer each with a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked patty, caramelized onions, another slice of Swiss cheese, and top with the remaining bread slices (buttered side up).
- Grill Sandwiches: Heat a clean skillet over medium heat. Grill the assembled sandwiches for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Serve: Slice sandwiches in half if desired and serve immediately with extra secret sauce or pickles on the side.
