2. A Shocking Reaction
The next day, filled with excitement, we returned to the hospital to spend more time with Lily. My mother, Susan, joined us. She had supported me quietly through the years, so I expected her to share in our happiness.
At first, everything seemed normal. She smiled as she entered the room. But the moment she looked closely at Lily, something changed.
Her expression shifted from joy to concern, then to something deeper—fear.
To my shock, she said words I never expected to hear: that we shouldn’t keep the baby.
Confused and overwhelmed, I asked her to explain. She pointed to a small mark behind Lily’s ear—a detail I hadn’t thought much about. But to her, it meant something important.
She then revealed a part of her past I had never known. Years ago, during a difficult time, she had participated in a medical donation program. At the time, it seemed like a simple decision with no long-term consequences.
But now, she feared there could be a connection between that past and the baby in front of us.
Her words didn’t make immediate sense, but they raised enough concern that we decided to take a closer look at everything.
