Part 1: The Phone Call That Changed a Father’s World

During an ordinary workday in his office in Nashville, Rowan Mercer nearly ignored a call from an unknown number. Like many professionals in the middle of a busy meeting, he assumed it was just another interruption.

But something made him pause—and answer.

At first, there was only silence. Then, a faint voice broke through.

“Dad?”

Rowan immediately recognized his son, Micah. The tone in his voice was enough to make his heart race. This wasn’t a normal call.

“Micah? What’s going on?” Rowan asked, already standing up.

The boy tried to stay composed, but fear slipped through his words. He explained that his younger sister, Elsie, wasn’t waking up properly and felt very hot. Their mother wasn’t home, and there was no food left in the house.

In that moment, everything else faded away.

Rowan left immediately, his mind racing. He tried calling Delaney, the children’s mother, several times—but there was no response. With growing concern, he drove home as fast as he could, replaying his son’s words over and over.

When he arrived, the house felt unusually quiet.

Inside, he found Micah sitting on the floor, holding onto a pillow, trying to stay strong. When he saw his father, he whispered softly, “I didn’t know if you were coming.”

Rowan reassured him and quickly checked on Elsie, who was lying on the couch, weak and feverish. Without hesitation, he picked her up and rushed both children to the hospital.
