Part 1: When Respect Turns Into Distance
I never imagined that one day I would feel like a stranger in my own son’s life.
My name is Alejandro Salazar. I am 68 years old, and I spent more than four decades working in construction—building roads, bridges, and commercial spaces across Mexico. My work was not easy, but it gave me something I valued deeply: stability, experience, and the ability to provide for my family.
Years ago, after a successful business deal, I bought a large house and allowed my son, Diego, and his wife, Lucía, to live there. I told them it was their home, a gift to help them start their life together.
What I did not tell them was simple: legally, the property remained under my company.
At the time, I believed trust was enough.
Over the years, however, something began to change. Conversations became shorter. Respect slowly turned into distance. Small comments, subtle attitudes, and growing indifference created a gap between us.
At gatherings, I sometimes felt out of place—as if I no longer belonged in the life I had helped build.
Still, I remained silent, hoping things would improve.
