Part 1: An Unusual Decision That Sparked Rumors
The phone call came late at night, its message unsettling and unclear. An unfamiliar voice repeated the phrase “DNA scandal,” leaving a sense of tension that lingered long after the call ended.
My name is Lara. I am twenty-nine years old, and for months, my life had been the subject of constant whispers. People in the neighborhood watched me with curiosity and judgment after I married my eighty-year-old neighbor, Don Raúl Hernández.
Before everything changed, Don Raúl was known as a kind and respected man. He greeted everyone warmly, helped neighbors fix small problems, and never asked for anything in return except simple kindness. His home reflected his personality—modest, welcoming, and full of memories, with a courtyard shaded by bougainvillea and a quiet corner where he spent his afternoons reading.
The problems began when his nephews suddenly appeared. Though they had rarely been present in his life, they quickly showed interest in his property. They started asking for access to his documents and keys, claiming they wanted to help. However, it became clear that their intentions were not entirely sincere.
One day, I noticed one of them going through his mailbox without permission. Later, Don Raúl admitted they were trying to legally declare him incapable of managing his affairs. With unpaid taxes and an old loan threatening his home, they had found an opportunity to take control.
I worked in accounting, and when I reviewed the documents, I understood the situation immediately. The debt could be used as a reason to remove him from his own home.
That evening, as we shared a simple meal, I made a decision that would change everything.
“Marry me,” I said. “It will make it harder for them to push you out.”
It was not a romantic proposal in the traditional sense, but it came from a place of care and determination. After careful thought, Don Raúl agreed. We married quietly at the civil registry, with only two witnesses and no celebration—just a promise to support each other.
