Part 1: A Subtle Warning No One Noticed
The car moved steadily through the city streets, blending into the rhythm of the afternoon. Behind the wheel, Rafael kept his eyes forward, but his thoughts were elsewhere. Something about that day felt different—unsettling in a way he couldn’t yet explain.
In the back seat, young Mateo sat unusually still. Normally, he would glance outside or ask small questions about the world passing by. But today, he seemed withdrawn, his body tense, his gaze distant.
After a long silence, Mateo spoke in a quiet voice, barely above a whisper.
“My back hurts…”
It wasn’t just what he said—it was how he said it. There was hesitation, as if the words carried more meaning than they seemed.
Rafael glanced at him through the mirror, noticing small details he had never paid attention to before: the way Mateo avoided sudden movement, the way his hands stayed close to his body, the way he seemed cautious even in silence.
Trying to keep things calm, Rafael gently asked, “Does anyone know about this?”
Mateo hesitated before answering. His fingers tightened slightly, and he shook his head.
“She says… it’s better if no one talks about it.”
That sentence stayed with Rafael. It didn’t sound like something a child should have to say.
As they approached the large family home, everything outside appeared perfect—well-kept gardens, quiet surroundings, and a sense of order that gave no sign of concern. But inside the car, Rafael felt that something important had just been revealed, even if it wasn’t fully understood yet.
Before stepping out, Mateo looked back and asked softly, “You won’t tell… right?”
Rafael paused. Instead of giving a quick answer, he chose his words carefully.
“I’ll make sure you’re okay,” he said gently.
It wasn’t a simple promise—but it was an honest one.
