I wasn’t supposed to hear it.
Avery’s voice came through the hallway, low and careful, like she had practiced sounding normal.
“Mom doesn’t know the truth… and she can’t find out.”
She was talking to Ryan.
I stopped walking.
Didn’t step forward. Didn’t interrupt.

They didn’t go to a store.
They went to a hospital.
I stayed back as I watched them walk in, carrying flowers like it was something they had done before. Like this wasn’t their first visit.
Something cold settled in my chest.
I followed them inside.
They went up to the third floor.
Room 312.
Then they disappeared behind a door.
I waited.
When they came out, Avery’s face was red.
She had been crying.
