#### Part 2: A Moment of Hurt… and Strength
As we stood there, a small group of adults passed by. One of them noticed Katie sitting alone and made an insensitive remark about how certain events can be difficult for children in different family situations.
The words stung—but more than anything, they reminded me how important it was to stand strong for my daughter.
I gently replied,
“She does have a father. And he loved her more than anything.”
I didn’t need to say more. Katie knew who her father was. And so did I.
Just as I was about to suggest we leave, something unexpected happened.
The gym doors opened. The music paused. Conversations faded into silence.
A group of uniformed service members entered the room together, walking with quiet purpose. At the front was a high-ranking officer, his presence calm yet commanding.
His eyes scanned the room… and then stopped on Katie.
