#### Part 1: A Promise That Still Lived On
My husband, Keith, passed away while serving on a military base just a few months ago.
Losing him changed everything. But for our daughter Katie, it was especially hard. She had always been deeply attached to her father—he was her hero, her protector, and her favorite person in the world.
When the announcement for the school’s father-daughter dance came, I wasn’t sure we should attend. The idea of walking into a room full of fathers and daughters felt overwhelming.
But Katie surprised me.
“Mom,” she said softly, “I want to go… to honor Dad. Even if he can’t be there.”
Her words stayed with me. Keith had always promised he would take her to every dance, every year. And in that moment, I realized—this wasn’t just about a school event. It was about keeping his promise alive.
That evening, the gym was filled with laughter, music, and decorations. Balloons floated above, and little girls twirled happily with their fathers.
Katie, however, sat quietly off to the side, holding her dress tightly, trying to stay strong.
After a while, she looked up at me and whispered,
“Mom… can we go home?”
My heart ached. I reached for her hand, wishing I could take away her sadness.
