Part 1: Trust Built on Sacrifice
In many places, people believe that a man proves his love through hard work and sacrifice. I believed that completely. By the time my son was born, my life had become a cycle of long hours, physical exhaustion, and quiet promises to provide a better future for my family.
After my wife, Hue, gave birth, I made what I thought was the responsible decision. I sent my mother a monthly allowance of 1.5 million pesos to take care of her. In the hospital, my mother had reassured me, saying she would care for Hue as if she were her own daughter. I trusted her without hesitation.
Hue had always been gentle and patient, the kind of person who rarely complained, even in pain. But I knew childbirth had taken a serious toll on her body. The doctor had clearly instructed that she needed proper nutrition—warm meals, protein, milk, vegetables—and plenty of rest to recover and care for our newborn.
I took those instructions seriously. I bought vitamins, ensured there was enough money for quality food, and checked in whenever I could. Every morning before work, I kissed Hue goodbye. Every day, I called home.
But something was off—something I ignored.
Most of the time, my mother answered the phone. She always had an explanation: Hue was sleeping, resting, eating, or busy. I accepted it all without question. I told myself I was doing everything right. I believed that providing financially was the same as protecting my family.
I was wrong.
