Part 3: Choosing What Truly Matters
I stood up, my decision already made.
“Where is she?” I asked.
“At the neighbor’s house,” my wife replied nervously.
“I’ll be back,” I said.
When I arrived, my mother was laughing with other women, completely at ease. When she saw me, her smile faded.
“Why are you home so early?” she asked.
“Come with me,” I said firmly.
Back home, the tension in the kitchen was undeniable. My mother saw the bowl on the table and quickly tried to dismiss it.
“That was for the cats,” she said casually.
I felt anger rise in my chest.
“Then why was my wife eating it?”
“She’s stubborn,” my mother replied. “Women shouldn’t eat too much after childbirth.”
I looked at the bowl again.
“This?” I said. “You call this acceptable?”
She stayed silent.
I took a deep breath.
“What is the money I send every month for?” I asked.
“To help the household,” she replied.
“No,” I said firmly. “It’s to take care of my wife.”
The room fell silent.
“Are you choosing her over your own mother?” she asked.
I looked at my wife, then at the bowl, and finally back at my mother.
“I’m choosing what’s right,” I said. “I believe what I see.”
I placed an envelope on the table.
“This is enough for you to find another place nearby,” I said calmly. “You’ll always be my mother. But my responsibility now is my wife and my child.”
That night, everything felt different.
I cooked fresh food—warm soup, rice, and fish—and placed it in front of my wife.
She hesitated.
“You can eat,” I said gently.
“Really?” she asked.
I nodded.
She took a bite, and tears filled her eyes again.
“It’s… very good,” she whispered.
Later, as she held our baby, I stood beside her.
“I’m sorry,” I said.
“For what?” she asked.
“For not seeing it sooner.”
She shook her head.
“From now on,” I continued, “no one will ever make you go hungry again.”
She smiled faintly.
For the first time in weeks, there was peace in her eyes.
And in that moment, I understood something deeply important:
Money can provide comfort.
But true care…
comes from love, attention, and the courage to stand up for those who depend on you most.
