1. The Night That Changed Everything
Some people spend their entire lives searching for someone who loves them without conditions. I was lucky enough to grow up knowing that kind of love from the very beginning.
My grandfather became my whole world when I was just a baby. I was too young to remember the night that changed both of our lives, but over the years I learned the story through neighbors, hospital reports, and the careful way he told it whenever I asked.
Late one night, an electrical problem caused a fire in the house where my parents and I lived. The flames spread quickly, filling the rooms with smoke. My parents were unable to escape in time.
Neighbors gathered outside, watching the glow from the windows and calling emergency services. Then someone realized that a baby was still inside.
My grandfather, who was sixty-seven years old at the time, did not hesitate. He ran into the burning house and managed to find me. Moments later, he came out carrying me safely in his arms, coughing from the smoke but determined to keep me safe.
Paramedics insisted he remain in the hospital for observation because of the smoke he had inhaled. He stayed only one night before leaving so he could take care of me.
From that day forward, he raised me as his own child.
