Part 2: A Discovery in the Shed
A faint scratching sound came from the back door. At first, Erin ignored it, assuming it was Baxter, their dog. But the sound was different—urgent, almost anxious.
When she opened the door, Baxter stood there, alert and focused. In his mouth, he carried something yellow.
A sweater.
Erin’s heart skipped as she recognized it. It looked just like Lily’s favorite yellow sweater—the one she used to wear on weekends. For a moment, confusion and emotion overwhelmed her.
Before she could take it, Baxter gently pulled back and ran toward the yard, as if asking her to follow.
Without hesitation, Erin did.
He led her through the backyard and into an empty lot nearby—a place Lily used to visit during the summer. At the far end stood an old wooden shed, quiet and worn by time.
Inside, Erin found something she never expected.
In the corner, carefully arranged, was a small nest made from clothing—familiar clothing. A scarf, a hoodie, a cardigan. And nestled among them was a calm calico cat with three tiny kittens resting beside her.
Erin slowly stepped closer, realizing something important.
The yellow sweater wasn’t the one she feared—it was a second one Lily had owned. A backup she had insisted on keeping.
This discovery changed everything.
Lily had been coming here. She had found the cat and quietly taken care of her, bringing food, water, and pieces of clothing to keep her warm. Without telling anyone, she had created a safe space for a vulnerable animal.
Erin felt a different kind of emotion rise within her—not just sadness, but warmth. A quiet understanding.
Her daughter’s kindness was still here.
