2. The Hidden Letter
While carefully altering the dress at her grandmother’s kitchen table, Catherine noticed something unusual sewn into the lining of the bodice. Beneath the fabric was a small hidden pocket.
Inside it was a folded letter written by Grandma Rose. As Catherine read the four-page note, her entire understanding of her family changed.
The letter revealed that Rose was not Catherine’s biological grandmother. Catherine’s mother, Elise, had once worked as Rose’s caregiver after Rose’s husband passed away. During that time, Elise had secretly fallen in love with a married man.
That man was Billy—Rose’s own nephew.
Elise had never told Billy about the pregnancy. Soon after, he moved abroad with his family, unaware that he had left behind a child. When Elise later died from illness when Catherine was only five years old, Rose made a life-changing decision.
Instead of revealing the truth, she raised Catherine as her granddaughter and told everyone the child had been adopted. She believed the secret would protect Catherine from family conflict and rejection.
In the final lines of the letter, Rose wrote that Billy still didn’t know the truth and that Catherine was now old enough to decide what to do with it.
