It was a place where power was misused, and fear was used to keep people silent. After a devastating event, she managed to escape, but for weeks she had been running, never certain if she would truly be safe.
Elias listened without interrupting.
He realized that her fear wasn’t temporary—it was built from experience. Every step she had taken since escaping had been driven by survival.
When he offered her shelter in his cabin hidden in the hills, she hesitated. Trust didn’t come easily anymore. But exhaustion eventually overcame doubt, and she agreed.
That night, for the first time in many days, Mave rested under a safe roof. The quiet of the cabin felt unfamiliar, almost unreal. She remained alert, but slowly, she began to believe that not everyone intended to harm her.
Elias, on the other hand, knew that her past wasn’t something that would simply disappear. People and places like the ones she described rarely let go so easily.
