Part 1: A Small Complaint That Wouldn’t Go Away
For three weeks, eight-year-old Mia repeated the same sentence every single night before going to sleep:
“Mom, my bed feels too tight.”
At first, her mother Julia thought it was nothing unusual. Children often describe discomfort in creative or unclear ways. Maybe the sheets were uneven, or perhaps Mia was simply trying to avoid sleeping alone. Like many parents, Julia reassured her, adjusted the bedding, and gently encouraged her to rest.
But Mia kept saying it.
She wasn’t frightened or upset—just certain. Calmly, consistently, every night, she described the same strange feeling, as if something beneath her was pressing upward.
Julia checked everything she could. The mattress felt normal. The bed frame was stable. Nothing appeared broken or out of place. Her husband Eric assumed it was just a phase, something that would pass with time.
Still, Julia couldn’t ignore the pattern.
After a full week of hearing the same concern, she decided to replace the mattress entirely. It was an expensive step, but she wanted peace of mind and comfort for her daughter.
For one night, everything seemed fine.
Then Mia said it again.
“Mom, it’s happening again.”
That’s when Julia realized this wasn’t something she could dismiss.
