In most cases, these small organisms are larvae of the spotted wing drosophila, a type of fruit fly known for laying eggs inside soft fruits like strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries.

Unlike other insects that lay eggs on the surface, this species places its eggs inside ripening fruit. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae remain hidden within the fruit, making them difficult to detect during normal handling.

This is a natural occurrence, especially in fresh or minimally treated produce.
